About Ish's VV World

About the Artist-

I’m Ishtiaq Hussain, a profoundly Deaf individual from Stourbridge. I am a visual vernacular artist, a fluent BSL user who loves to attend theatres and in my spare time I like to keep fit and socialise with the deaf community. One of my proudest achievements was climbing Mount Everest to its base camp in 2011 in which we raised thousands to build new homes for those who were struck by tragedy in Pakistan where floods took their homes and lives.  It is something close to my heart as this country holds my history.

I love using my Visual vernacular skills and comedy to entertain people, I love the fact that it is a no sound entertainment where people can watch and visualise what I am presenting. I also love to use my skills to make people laugh by using exaggerated visual jokes, life is too short to be boring!

What is Visual Vernacular?

Visual Vernacular is an expressive form of storytelling in which the performer uses their body to tell the story. It consists of many elements including mime, poetry and cinematic techniques  in which all these come together to provide a captivating visually, entertaining scene. I started visual vernacular (VV) in 2011 and I have toured  all over the UK performing at theatres, weddings, Deaf clubs, birthday parties, children’s entertainment and conventions. My success has led to me to set up my own VV service in which I provide VV workshops, performing at events. In the recent Coronavirus pandemic I had to divert all my services online which has been equally successful. I now look forward to delivering more in person as interaction is best!

Very good job on explaining very clearly.  That's easy to understand with fab demonstrations and examples.

    Fab performance at the end!

  • Alison France, Stoke-on-Trent

    Just Amazing!

Totally drawn into the visual storytelling!

    High recommended!

  • Martin Jenkins, Cardiff

I want to be become VV artist

  • Jonny Cotsen, Cardiff

Would love to do more of this!

Maybe be good to do a short performance!

  • Daniel-Jay Cropp, Stourbridge

Its so amazing experience, discover the new language, enjoy working with the group, has cheered me up, when its finished, I even begged him to extension for 1 hour, but its only 2 hour workshop, actually loved it, will learn more about vv whenever workshop happening again

  • Paul Dowling, Oldham

I felt that Ish presented his workshop extremely well, he made me feel very relaxed and the experience of the workshop very enjoyable. Ish explained every detail very clearly in order to grasp the context of what is required to use VV. Ish encouraged everyone to partake and gave feedback and praise like a true professional. The whole experience was most enjoyable and has given me the confidence to practice the art of VV.

  • Evelyn Davenport, London

I will definitely be recommending the workshop to the London and SE ASLI group.

It was an evening well spent. I enjoyed it as much as going to the theatre! Quality course with ample opportunity given for us to experiment and participate.

    Very many thanks Ish.

  • Denise Bennett, Nottingham

For anyone wanting to incorporate more body language/facial expression this is a must.  For me when translating a song to BSL sometimes the BSL just doesn’t meet the lyrics or the music which is why I wanted to do this workshop.  Absolutely wonderful session.

  • Margaret Elaine Hill, Stockport

A most enjoyable workshop from VV World, very well delivered.

Informative, Interactive, well-paced, good feedback from our Tutor and encouragement from the other participants.

Thank you for an enjoyable evening Workshop.

  • Lesley Weatherson, Portsmouth

The visual vernacular is a skill that interpreters should use more often- we just don’t always know how. This course expands one’s knowledge and skills in a safe space to try and try again. I left feeling two things- 1) I want to learn more about VV and B) I plan to use it more when interpreting.  Ish’s teaching skills are excellent. Each section/skill set explained in a fun but educational way- highly recommended.

  • Linzi Weatherson, Portsmouth

A HUGE THANK YOU! I would love to do this workshop again and would happily play. It was a joy to be part of an intimate workshop and encourage Ish to deliver to more audiences. The learning is invaluable for BSL Interpreters, both TSLI and RSLI. As a TSLI myself, amongst RSLI colleagues, I felt very safe and positively encouraged by Ish.

  • Sam Tucker, Birmingham

Ishtiaq shows how it is possible to embody the character of a person, animal, or thing.  He visually creates a story in a way that is totally captivating.

  • Melanie Pendrick-Wright, Gatwick

Ish is an engaging and encouraging trainer - allowing the group to experiment and gives you confidence to try it out without feeling embarrassed.

I would be keen to know where these sessions are advertised please/how to keep in touch for future sessions as I’d like to attend again for the full session please.  Thank you.

  • Claire Anderson, Cardiff

Really good training! Enjoyed the pace and learning about Ish’s background. Thank you so much for contacting me when there was a last-minute space available!

I learnt a lot and wish I could bottle it up!! Ish makes it look so beautiful and very very clear. The order, pace of movement and rhythm, was a joy to watch.

  • Morgan Dunsford, Bristol

I couldn’t recommend Ish’s VV World workshop enough! Ish had me engaged for the entire 2 hours, the time really flew by! As a second language user of BSL this was a great session to learn about the linguistics that make up the elements of VV and to give it a go in a safe and comfortable environment. As well as understand the art and creative expression that is at the heart of VV performances. Ish provided us with a master class in VV, himself being so talented, I could watch his VV all day! Do not hesitate to get yourself booked onto a workshop.

  • Carol-Anne McGlennon, Paisley

Excellent delivery, very clear overview of what is needed for VV (examples given throughout), delivered in a very friendly, informal fashion. The two hours flew in and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!

  • Jackie Orr, Belfast

This workshop was amazing, Ish made everyone feel at ease and explained the visual concept in simple terms.  The time flew in and we covered so much in 2 hours but it did not feel crammed in, it was delivered at a great pace.

  • Marie Jensen, Stoke-On-Trent

Ish’s VV Workshop was both insightful and beautiful. His delivery was very clear and at a good pace.

I am more confident to make my own Interpretations more visual, thus making it more accessible to my audience and clients.

    Brilliant workshop. Thank you! 😊

  • Lynn West, Rye

I really appreciated Ishtaiq’s interaction with the participants, he was very encouraging.

I plan to practice on my own in private! I will pick one story line and add more and more detail. Perhaps when I am ready I will film the story.

I would like to attend more workshops.

VV will benefit my work with Deaf people that have limited use of BSL.

  • Frankie Sheppard, Birmingham

Ish was absolutely brilliant! I hadn’t expected a small group but worked really well and all were very encouraging and supportive. I liked how Ish signed back to us what we had produced for us to see how it would be better adapted. This was a good way for us to see how it can be done and areas to improve on.

  • Karen Pane, Northwich

I really enjoyed the workshop, I learnt a lot, the teaching was clear, well explained and gave me acti9vities involving VV which was good. I realize I have to learn a lot. I do hope to join next level VV workshop! Look forward to the next one! Thank you

  • Tracey Rail, Cornwall

Learning should be fun – and this workshop was not only great fun, but really informative and eye-opening. It’s given me thirst for more learning and research on the subject and I’m sure it will have a positive impact on my work as a BSL interpreter, as well as my ability to play and have fun with sign and VV
