Submissions were judged\u00a0\u00a0based on language fluency, creativity, originality, content, and performance confidence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The British Deaf Association (BDA) is delighted to announce\u00a0<strong>Ishtiaq Hussain\u00a0<\/strong>as the 2025 BSL Poet\u00a0\u00a0Laureate, an esteemed honour that comes with a \u00a3500 prize and the exciting opportunity to perform at\u00a0\u00a0DeafZone at Glastonbury 2025. Ishtiaq&#8217;s poetry explores a powerful and important theme, delivered\u00a0\u00a0with a confident and engaging performance that blends humour, fluent movement, and thoughtful use\u00a0\u00a0of metaphor. The outstanding runners-up of the 2025 BSL Poet Laureate competition are\u00a0<strong>Maral\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Mamaghanizadeh<\/strong>, who takes second place and will receive \u00a3200, and\u00a0<strong>Zo\u00eb McWhinney<\/strong>, who takes third\u00a0\u00a0place and will be awarded \u00a3100. Maral\u2019s poem is notable for its strong BSL, clear structure, and effective\u00a0\u00a0use of space and symmetry, while Zo\u00eb\u2019s piece stands out with a confident performance, rich in language\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and creativity. The BDA offers its heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and extends its sincere\u00a0\u00a0thanks to every participant for their creative contributions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">As BSL Poet Laureate,\u00a0<strong>Ishtiaq Hussain\u00a0<\/strong>will collaborate with the BDA to create and share original poetry\u00a0\u00a0throughout the year, while also performing on the Poetry and Words stage at Glastonbury, at the BSL\u00a0\u00a0Conference, and at the BDA AGM, ensuring their voice is heard at some of the most exciting events in\u00a0\u00a0the UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Rebecca Mansell<\/strong>, Chief Executive of the British Deaf Association, said:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe BSL Poet Laureate competition is a vital way for us to celebrate the richness and uniqueness of BSL\u00a0\u00a0and the vibrant culture that surrounds it.
